Кома після вступних елементів

В наступних двох статтях я розповім про найбільш поширені випадки вживання коми в англійських реченнях.

КОМА ВЖИВАЄТЬСЯ	КОМА НЕ ВЖИВАЄТЬСЯ
Якщо речення починається з підрядного часу (as, when, after), умови (if, when, provided that…, unless, whether) чи допустового підрядного (although, though, even though), після підрядного речення необхідна кома: Although we had reviewed the film twice before, we never noticed these details about the shooting. Provided that the weather is fine, we'll have a picnic on Saturday As the day drew to a smoky end, the firefighters put out the last of the embers. After her appointment at the orthodontist, Danielle cooked eggs for dinner because she could easily chew an omelet. If he had told me, I wouldn't have asked. As a result of the divorce, we didn’t have a lot of money.	Якщо підрядне умови стоїть після головного речення, кома не вживається: I will visit the Great Wall if I go to China. If you see Simon ask him to ring me.
Коли вступні елементи (навіть короткі) стосуються усього речення, а не тільки певного слова, кома необхідна: Fortunately, no one in the bridal party was in that car. Sadly, the old church was completely destroyed. On the other hand, someone obviously was badly injured.	Після коротких вступних елементів кома останнім часом вживається все рідше. До таких елементів належать прийменникові фрази (by evening), поодинокі прислівники (jauntily) чи іменні групи (yesterday afternoon): Yesterday afternoon we sat around waiting for Bill to arrive. In 1919 his family left Russia and moved to France. By evening we had become impatient. Jauntily he walked into the hall. Як відсутність, так і присутність коми не буде помилкою.
Звертайте увагу, щоб коротка вступна фраза не «злилАся» із рештою речення тоді, коли від цього залежить сенс всього висловлювання. Спробуйте прочитати наступні речення спочатку без коми: Until the spring course lists will not be published. Until the spring, course lists will not be published. Inside the gym was brightly lighted and clean. Inside, the gym was brightly lighted and clean.
Обов’язково вживається кома після абсолютних фраз: Legs quivering, our old dog Gizmo dreamed of chasing squirrels. Her arms folded across her chest, Professor Hill warned the class about the penalties of plagiarism.
Інфінітивні фрази в більшості випадків відділяються комою: To avoid burning another bag of popcorn, Brendan pressed his nose against the microwave door, sniffing suspiciously with every breath. To escape with our lives, we would have to run for the exits.	Проте якщо інфінітивна фраза є частиною головного речення, то кома не потрібна: To believe in one's self is a good thing. Janice and her friends went to the mall to flirt with the cute guys who congregate at the food court.
